Give Blood, Play Rugby. And Help Break the Record on Dec. 22, 2012

On Dec. 22, 2012, TryLine Rugby Charity and the American Red Cross will again team up in effort to break the Wisconsin’s single day blood drive record and reach their goal of 600 units of blood.
The American Red Cross has designated sixteen sites across Wisconsin to host this massive undertaking. The holiday season is a critical time: blood supplies are at their low point when the need is at its highest. By donating just one pint of blood, every one of us can make a difference and give the gift of Life!
How Rugby Plays Its Part
As the world’s second largest sport, Rugby is known for its sense of community, respect and friendship among its players. “Give Blood, Play Rugby” is an old rugby saying with an interesting past. Story has it that a group of players from Wisconsin were heading out of state to play in a tournament, low on cash, the players decided to donate blood to help pay traveling expenses and in doing so the phrase was born.
Through the 2011 Give Blood Challenge, TryLine Rugby Charity looks to unite those lads of lore and encourage Wisconsin rugby teams, past players, friends and families, businesses and generous donors to compete at the highest level without having to play rugby. Together we’ll score one for the record books.
While Rugby is mostly played as a club sport in the United States, it is an emerging sport among the universities and is considered one of the country’s fastest growing sports. With its re-admittance into the 2016 Olympics (The USA men’s team have won the last two Olympic contests held in 1920 and 1924) rugby will continue its climb in popularity. It is with the surge of popularity that TryLine Rugby Charity will set its sights on growing this event into the world’s largest single day blood drive.
